  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently until smooth.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut into rounds.
  8. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Notes

  • For best results, use cold butter and handle the dough as little as possible.
  • These scones are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days.
  • Feel free to add raisins or currants for a traditional twist.
