Description

Chicken Fried Steak with Country Gravy is a classic comfort food dish featuring tenderized beef steak, breaded and fried to perfection, served with a rich and creamy country gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 cups milk (for gravy)
  • 1/4 cup flour (for gravy)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Begin by tenderizing the beef round steak using a meat mallet.
  2. In a bowl, mix together flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.
  4. Dredge each piece of steak in the flour mixture, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat again with the flour mixture.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the breaded steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the steaks and set aside on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  8. In the same skillet, add 1/4 cup of flour to the remaining oil and whisk to create a roux.
  9. Slowly add in the milk while whisking continuously until the gravy thickens.
  10. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  11. Serve the chicken fried steak topped with the country gravy.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate the steak in buttermilk for a few hours before cooking.
  • Adjust the thickness of the gravy by adding more or less milk.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or biscuits for a complete meal.
