Description
Classic Beer-Battered Fish and Chips is a traditional dish featuring crispy, golden-battered fish served with thick-cut fries, perfect for a Friday fish fry.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beer (lager or ale)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 4 large potatoes, cut into fries
- Salt for seasoning
Instructions
- Prepare the fries by soaking the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
- Gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth.
- Dip the fish fillets into the batter, allowing excess to drip off.
- Carefully place the battered fish into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes per side.
- Remove the fish and drain on paper towels.
- Fry the prepared potatoes in the same oil until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season fries with salt and serve alongside the fish.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, double fry the potatoes.
- Use cold beer for a lighter batter.
- Serve with tartar sauce and lemon wedges for added flavor.
