Description

A delightful German casserole featuring sauerkraut, bacon, and a hint of sweetness from brown sugar, perfect for a comforting meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 oz) sauerkraut, drained
  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the drained sauerkraut, cooked bacon, sautéed onion, brown sugar, cheddar cheese, sour cream, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.
  7. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use a plant-based alternative.
