- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup chopped herbs (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add flour and knead until a smooth dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into small balls.
- Shape the balls into a tree shape on a baking sheet, stacking them to resemble a Christmas tree.
- If desired, sprinkle cheese and herbs between the layers.
- Let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter version, add cinnamon and sugar to the dough.
- Serve warm with butter or your favorite dip.
- This bread can be made ahead and frozen, then reheated before serving.
