Description

Irish Brown Soda Bread is a wholesome, nutty loaf that is perfect for spring. It is easy to make and packed with flavor.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the rolled oats, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds to the flour mixture.
  4. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  5. Stir until a dough forms, then turn it out onto a floured surface.
  6. Knead gently for a minute, then shape into a round loaf.
  7. Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a nuttier flavor, you can add chopped nuts to the dough.
