- 1 whole turkey (12–14 pounds)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups bread crumbs
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 cups chicken broth
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the bread crumbs, celery, onion, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Stuff the turkey with the bread crumb mixture.
- Rub the softened butter all over the turkey.
- Place the turkey in a roasting pan and pour chicken broth around it.
- Cover the turkey with aluminum foil and roast for 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Remove the foil and roast for an additional 30 minutes to brown the skin.
- Check the internal temperature; it should reach 165°F (74°C).
- Let the turkey rest for 20 minutes before carving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, marinate the turkey overnight with herbs.
- Serve with traditional Amish sides like mashed potatoes and green beans.
- Leftover turkey can be used in sandwiches or soups.
