Description

A delightful and easy-to-make apple slab pie that is perfect for gatherings and family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Roll out half of the dough on a floured surface to fit a 13×18 inch baking sheet. Place in the baking sheet.
  5. In another bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Mix well.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into the crust-lined baking sheet.
  7. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges and cut slits in the top for steam to escape.
  8. Brush the top with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter pie, add more sugar to the apple filling.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
